Aside from great looks, this box has performance to match. I haven’t had any issues since I bought it and it provides excellent signal strength throughout my 2500 square foot single story house from the front yard to the back yard. The big thing I really like is the additional ethernet port. Any load you can send through a cord helps since I use a network storage to provide data to my nvidia shield and I can get great throughput between my computer on the server while still getting great performance from 2 wifi cams, 2 google homes, and all my other mobile devices. This thing has met every expectation. The multigig port is a huge bonus as I will likely upgrade to a 10gig card in the NAS but for that time being, I’m using port trunking AKA link aggregation to speed up communication, which is a great feature as well.

Really happy with the product. Setup was a breeze and everything is lighting fast. I signed up for FiOS and my old router could not make use of the FiOS gigabit speed. This new router is AMAZING. I am on WIRELESS and getting double what I was getting on the old router. Wireless is supposed to be slow! Or so I thought. This router has a lot of great features including a guest network, dynamic DNS, and automatic switching between two high-speed 5GHz networks. The router interface is extremely similar to my old Netgear but its just cleaner and more modern which makes it enjoyable to use. The Nighthawk app, eh- take it or leave it. It’s a cool option to have but sort of unnecessary in my opinion. My only complaints are as follows. Documentation is lacking on what the “high-speed” port is on the back, and how to make use of it, and the option where you can combine two ports into one super-speed port. There isn’t a description of this or really any explanation how to turn this on. There also isn’t a good description of how the antenna work so you are left testing it out yourself or guessing if you can mount the unit to a wall without affecting its performance. If you are deciding between a bunch of routers, the RAX70 is the best router to get. If you have the money for a more expensive one, go for it, but I don’t think you are getting too much more for your money, likewise, I wouldn’t choose any of the lesser models as there are some important features exclusive to the RAX70. I wouldn’t go with any other brand. Netgear has excellent products and I have always had Netgear routers and never had one fail on me. All of them I had to replace as I got other equipment but never due to the product itself failing in any capacity.Overall I’m impressed with the product. Setup was a breeze, and I couldn’t be happier with my new Netgear Nighthawk!

I pay for Comcast internet service at the 200 Mbps speed. I just dealt with my old router for far too long, because in my mind I couldn’t justify the cost for a newer, more robust router. I finally took the plunge, and I have never regretted it for a second. I have been using this router for a couple months now, and I am routinely getting download speeds that exceed the service I pay for (regularly clocking between 220-240 Mbps download speeds). There’s not much more to say. You seem to get what you pay for. It’s a great router, super powerful, and I love the app which I can use to monitor which devices in the house are connected to the network.

Signal is pretty damn good & strong (between -21 to -7 dBm). I wish more add-on’s supported the AX protocol, but I knew that going in. I have it working flawlessly with a few ‘other brand’ extenders using a different protocol (they don’t like the 5GHz standard pumping out of it though), because I’m not ready to fork out another $250 (or $500 for 2) for the EAX80 just yet; to make every corner of the house (3k+ sq. ft. and walls everywhere), and surrounding neighborhood a WiFi mecca. As it is, I have 7 LCD TV’s streaming live channels (from my cable provider) with very few hiccups; not to mention all the cell phones (7), Ring cameras (4), Echo devices (7), Roku’s (7), Xbox’s (2), computers (8), printers (2), and Fire TV Stick’s (2) . When it does have a “hiccup”, it’s usually due to the app and not the signal, so I can’t fault this router for that. I’m sure that when more add-on’s become available to fully admire what this router can do, the price of this will come down; and I’ll kick myself for not waiting. Am I happy with the purchase right now? Hell yeah. Would I recommend it? Hell yeah. Do I wish it was cheaper? Hell yeah.

I have Verizon’s horrid FIOS and they choose to keep the Ethernet port on the digital FIOS modem turned off and it cannot be turned on except by setting up an appointment and speaking with a Verizon service call center or by “tech support” via Verizon chat in the FIOS website with some people in India. They are extremely rude, will lie and not turn the port on and will just disconnect from the chat at any time. Their sole job is to upsell you on a new, more expensive FIOS plan. Verizon bills already amount to a car payment! Anyway, after 7 hours on chat and the next day with a Verizon FIOS support via phone in the US, I got my new router working. It’s awesome, has 5G and normal guest and home WiFi and has an amazingly far reaching signal. The only drawback being Verizon building tv functions into their router just to keep you from ditching their junky router and the fees they can collect from you using it. No more on demand and the TV guide does not function properly. Did I mention, I hate Verizon? The original Verizon router couldn’t reach the next room in the house without dropping a bar. And Verizon can’t rent me their router to add to the fees! Boohoo, I loathe your existence Verizon. Too bad you paid off the neighborhood coop association and we can’t have competition I’d switch to another of America’s horrible internet service providers just to spite you. Here’s to your bankruptcy.

Disclaimer: I am an I.T. network person at a large medical facility. I have never owned a Netgear home router before this one. My existing router was over 10 years old and after a lot of research and reading I decided on the Nighthawk AX12. From the moment I opened the box and plugged it in, I was impressed. Easy set up, easy management afterward, lots of great options for adding secure devices, GB ports, port teaming and Guest Networks, but above all PERFORMANCE. This router is blowing away all my expectations and my reception at both ends of my home and even out on my patio is out of the ballpark. It also smartly chooses the right band to reconnect to as I move around the house. And finally, I need to add, as a guy…..it even LOOKS extremely cool. B-1 Stealth Bomber comes to mind. Congrats Netgear you have scored with this Pro-Sumer router. I did not rate Tech Support because I haven’t had to use it even though it comes with (I believe) 90 days free.

This router replaced a great R7800 router which itself was doing fine but found a place elsewhere. Having worked with routers from Netgear to Apple to Ubiquity, I have to say – despite the high price I love this router. It’s done the best job of any single-router setup in a large family dwelling, no dropouts, reliable, good features. It’s fast – and I mean, operationally, and when I am sending large amounts of data between AC clients; this is where the Quad CPU setup really shines. The unit handles DFS exceptionally well, too – for once, Netgear gave it access to all DFS channels, and I see much less flipping (and issues after) than on the previous R7800 unit. Things like IPv6 and Smart Connect work well (current firmware).Don’t buy this for the Wifi-6 promise. In a year+, Wifi 6 (having just been certified) will gain 2 more frequencies, clients that have Wifi6 capability are just coming out, and there is no advantage to Wifi 5 or ‘older’ devices. At all. But, you know what – if you can forget the price tag, I found this to be overall the best ‘today’ router I could find.

4 and 1/2 Stars. The router works great though I had some real concerns about upgrading to this router based on mixed reviews and comments in the support forums. This said, I’m happy to report that firmware updates have fixed a lot of the problems that I was reading about. The latest firmware being 1.0.0.84, I can confirm that DFS channels is added and WAN aggregation is present even through it’s not seen on all of the product documentation. It’s also not clear to me yet if you can configure both WAN and downstream Ethernet aggregation at the same time since WAN aggregation uses WAN+LAN1 which was originally designated for the downstream Ethernet aggregation. Though the multi-link port might be more desirable for downstream NAS connections. The jury is still out on this and I haven’t attempted this yet. After unboxing, I downloaded the app on my iPhone and I followed the directions. I let it update the firmware to 1.0.0.84 then as a precaution to make sure I didn’t have any starting problems, I disabled the AX for now. Doing so seems to have set the 2.4 band to 40Mhz for b/g/n and the 5 band to 80Mhz a/n/ac. I did NOT enable Smart Connect and chose to keep the SSIDs separate. Then after setup was completed, I went to the advanced settings through the web interface 192.168.1.1 and I disabled automatic updates so I can research future firmware updates before beforehand.Everything is stable, I haven’t had any problems connecting laptops and games. I read that if there are connection problems to update those devices and drivers first and if necessary; change the 2.4 band to 20Mhz. So far this hasn’t been necessary. The overall range is great! The signal is stronger and the 5 band works much-much-much better than my previous router. Also in the 5 band, I’m getting the full Mbps over WiFi that my plan with Xfinity allows. In conclusion, I’m very happy with the router on day one. Combined with my new Netgear CM1200 modem, my network has never been faster and I’m future proofed for AX devices and gigabit Internet service. But I think Netgear could have done a much better job on product documentation and firmware stability in the early releases to reduce confusion and early problems. These issues also led to many complaints about their support call center which thankfully I didn’t need to use.Update: Three weeks later and not a problem at all. Patch 1.0.1.90 fixes a few things I didn’t experience but others have including a random factory reset problem, compatibility with AX200 cards and enabling/disabling 11ax OFDMA.

I’m worried about speaking too soon but so far this router is excellent. It handles 30 devices connected wirelessly to it perfectly and has great signal strength. The UI for the app is simple and neat looking while the web UI has all the settings that the app does not to configure your network. There is a USB port on the back that I use to connect a fan to, to keep the system cool, seeing as it does not have any fans of its own to keep heat out.It comes with a free month of Bitdefender Armor security which is their anti malware/anti hacking gateway application. The app works really well but it will slow down your inner connection a lot ,in most cases 50% decrease an internet speed was noticed. That is due to it filtering everything that comes in and out of the network, it slows it down considerably. It also comes with a free month of parental control that looks really nice I just have no need for it. So I won’t be renewing my subscription.

  10. T.K.

At first, I was surprised at its size. It is huge and looks like Darth Vader’s personal vehicle. Setup with the admin screens was not as straight forward as others I have used, and the current software only allows their VPN, not your VPN. Big weakness these days when security is so important. Once I got used to all of this and it was setup and running, wow, I was impressed. I upgraded because it appeared my ISP wasn’t delivering the full speed (I only had 25-75 GBs with the previous Gigabit router) I was paying for and my previous Gigabit router used to keep up, so the logical conclusion was something slowed down with the the ISP. Thus, I wasn’t expecting this to improve anything, but I was wrong. I have 200GBs service and Speedtest with this over WiFi is OVER 200. Surprisingly, the wired connection is in the 180’s using Cat 6 cable. Go figure. I use WiFi the most and it exceeds my expectations. I understand the design with the wings as antennas as they cover the entire 4000 sq. Ft. Which I previously had to use repeaters to cover. So here is the bottom line of what I know so far, having it about 3 weeks: It is every bit as fast as it claims, and I suspect if I would upgrade to the 1GB service, it would deliver it. It covers my whole house with a strong enough signal that no repeaters are required. It cost more than I wanted to spend, but it was worth it and my network is ready for the new 802.11ax devices coming out, so I’m comfortable that I won’t have to upgrade for several years. It takes up more space because it sits horizontally instead of vertically, but that is why the antennas work so well. It supports multiple simultaneous data streams without significant degradation of speed. Therefore, I think that deserves the 5 stars. I just hope they improve the internal software to provide more options and not drive you to use just their products and services. Time will tell.
