This is an upgrade from a smaller and older Garmin that I moved to an antique car. I love it. When it came the brightness was turned down so low you could barely see it turned on, and the battery was almost dead. Had to put it in the car for a couple of hours to charge up or it wouldn’t program. I transferred my old saved favorites from my older Garmin without a hitch. The software was easy to follow and worked like a champ. I like the new voice too. I trust Garmin and I like the free map upgrades. Be sure and register with Garmin when you buy…that gets you in the system for map and software upgrades. that you get via their on line acessable software…no phone calling, just load and go!.

I got the Garmin Drive 51 USA LM.After some research I learned the LM stands for lifetime maps. I thought something was wrong with it when I first plugged it into the computer with the included usb cable because I couldn’t get anything to really come up like it should. I then realized it was because the battery was completely drained. I left it for several minutes,( it was still charging because computer was still on) then it all started working like it should. I did an update and then took it off the computer and continued to charge with the same usb cord plugged into an outlet. I then set up ( inside the house ) my settings, which included avoiding tolls and highways ( also there was an exclusion for ferries). I chose to save those settings because I hate interstates. I was then able to find my trip location and save it ( there is a mini sd card slot if you need more room), all from inside the house. I also went ahead and saved my home address. I used the included cigarette plug charger to hook it up inside the car. I took the 3 hour trip. The GPS never failed me. It gave me great directions. This was very easy and correct. It wasn’t overly priced. If you want a good general GPS this one will be great. Very satisfied.

I have had to go to Canada for a few appointments and this GPS saves me so much worry. You don’t need to pay for extra data to pull up directions on your phone; this GPS covers you. I had an older Garmin GPS before buying this model. Please be aware that the older versions ask you if you want to turn off the tolls in an options menu of what to avoid. This model will PROMPT you after you put in the address. It will say “this road has tolls, do you want to continue or find an alternative route” or something similar. The feature IS THERE.

I usually use my phone for directions, but lately it seems that using the phone’s GPS system significantly drains the battery AND my data allowance. Finally decided to buy another Garmin (had one years ago) as I figured it would pay for itself and be a better deal than increasing my data allowance. The Garmin will pay for itself in just a few short months. This one is easy to use and does a great job. I am very happy with my purchase.

My old Garmin died of natural causes and it was time for a new one. I tried two competitors because they were cheaper. What a mistake – you get what you pay for! I have a new-found appreciation for the tried and true. Let’s start with the mounting device. The gyro ball remains THE best way to position my GPS and get it exactly the way I want it on my windshield. The screen is now extremely responsive to touch, so no problems there for inputting addresses. I LOVE how the default navigation screen shows my current speed at all times and turns red when I exceed the speed limit, but doesn’t come at me with repetitive, annoying audio that I’m speeding. The competitors’ units also did not display current speed as a default and I never could figure out how to change it through their very UN-intuitive settings. And Garmin very wisely relocated the on/off button to the back of the unit, so I don’t accidentally turn it off every time I grab the unit. The others still have it in the upper left top of the unit – uggh! In addition, Garmin has the power cord plug into the back of the unit – nice! The others have it attach to the left side of the unit so it protrudes into the driver’s line of vision. It’s obvious these competitor models were initially made for the European market where the driver is on the right side of the car. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. The only suggestion for Garmin that I have is that you need to add some sexy voices like Antonio Banderas. Lol!

My parents were replacing their old Garmin because of outdated maps and needing something that would tell them which lane to be in prior to needing to make the next turn. I gave them 5/5 stars for ease of use because I was able to walk them through setup over the phone, and they are in their late 70s and early 80s and don’t know what a taskbar or window is on a computer. The battery life is so/so, according to them. I can’t give a true rating due to not using it myself. I’d just recommend keeping a way to charge it with you. It didn’t come with a manual, which was a bit frustrating. The website is little harder for some generations to navigate to find tech support.

Upgraded (finally) from a Nuvi, bought in 2008. Even with the passage of eleven years, and improvements to be expected, the Drive 61 LM exceeds expectations. In terms of satellite acquisition time, ease of use, screen visibility, andso on – it’s a real standout. Internal battery life could be a bit better, but with expected use to be in a car (and powered from the car’s electrical system), it’s a minor quibble. I’d recommend the Drive 61 LM to anyone wanting a great, easy-to-use vehicle GPS.

User interface not as friendly as it could be. Had to look up some simple things in the manual to figure them out. But this is my first Garmin, been using a Magellan. Touch screen doesn’t work to well when trying to use the two finger method to zoom in or out. But the one finger touch functions just fine. Features and GPS directions seem pretty good. Just took 2,000 mile around trip and unit did well. Had to enter a mid point destination to get it to route the way I wanted to go but other than that I didn’t have any issues. Speed limit warning is kind of nice, chimes when speed limit lowers on the interstate. Overall good GPS for the money.

We just returned from a trip through Canada and the Rockies and it worked wonderfully. The most important thing to know about buying a GPS is to update them right out of the box. All GPS units are ALWAYS back level when you purchase them new or “certified”. Many of the other less reviews I have read are due to needing updates. The updates are not just for the maps. They are for GPS Operating Systems and are critical. This particular one have about 9 GPS Software Updates and a huge Map Update. It doesn’t matter the brand name or how much you spend the updates are the keys to success. Hope this is useful.

I replaced a Garmin that was > 15 years old that died and saw dramatic improvements in user interface, up-to-date connectors and ability to upgrade via computer. I didn’t get the traffic option since that required a data plan, which is what I was trying to avoid. The address entry with “pushed” suggestions is very efficient. There are many more options now rather than just “recent” and “saved.” There are flags for changes in speed limits, red light cameras and even turns in the road. It will pay for itself in just a few months over unlimited data. I choose the Garmin over less expensive “off brands” based on reviews of no customer support and difficulty upgrading data. Glad I did.
